Let's
visit the Quiet Side of The Northwoods
Welcome To Hazelhurst, WI
Hazlehurst, a small town nestled in the heart of the Northwoods, is a hidden gem that many travelers have yet to discover. Its serene and peaceful atmosphere, coupled with its picturesque natural beauty, makes it the perfect destination for those seeking a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle.
The town of Hazelhurst, like so many others in the Northwoods, got its start through the logging industry. In 1887, Cyrus Carpenter Yawkey, a nephew of Michigan lumbering tycoon William Clyman Yawkey, acquired land around Lake Katherine and started the Yawkey Lumber Company. In 2018, the Northwoods Land Trust received a gift of 431 acres of pristine land from the Yawkey Lumber Company. A majority of the property, now the Yawkey Forest Reserve, is open to non-motorized public outdoor recreation including hiking, birding, snowshoeing, and fishing. The popular Bearskin State Trail, runs through the heart of Hazelhurst as well as along the west boundary of the Yawkey Forest Reserve.
