Northern Highland American Legion State Forest

Spanning 236,000 acres & more than 900 lakes, the Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest is the largest state forest in Wisconsin. This vast expanse offers a picturesque setting for a range of outdoor activities, including scenic trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, remote camping, well-equipped family and group campgrounds, sandy beaches for swimming, and convenient boat launches for fishing.

Trail Passes

A Wisconsin State Park System vehicle admission sticker is required on all motor vehicles stopping in state parks, forests, and recreation areas. Admission stickers & Trail Passes can be purchased online, at Clear Lake Visitor Station, Crystal Lake Visitor Station, or DNR Service Center- Woodruff.

A state trail pass is required for all people age 16 or older biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding or in-line skating on certain trails. A state trail pass is not required for walking or hiking. Wisconsin state trail pass fees are the same for residents and non-residents. The annual pass is good for the calendar year and the daily pass is good for the day of purchase.

The Madeline Lake Trail is a hiking & biking trail located in Woodruff. The trail is a network of four loops of easy-to-moderate terrain with some rolling hills totaling 16.5 miles. A trail pass is required for biking. Dogs are allowed on a leash.
