We’re not quite ready for summer to wind down, and we’re guessing you aren’t either. August in the Northwoods is a great time to soak up those final summer days and make a few more family memories before the kids head back to school and busy fall schedules return.
The best part? You don’t need an elaborate itinerary. Whether you’re sneaking in a last-minute vacation, planning a weekend getaway, or just looking for a fun day with the family, there are plenty of easy ways to enjoy the end of summer in the Minocqua area.
Grab an Ice Cream
We like summer served two scoops at a time, so if you are craving more days of sunshine, swing into some of our ice cream shops for the sweetest way to savor the end of summer. Celebrate the end of swimsuit season by really indulging in some sweet treats at Boardwalk Ice Cream Fudge & Gelato or Hoggie Doggies.

Hit the Trails
Whether you’re here for a day trip, weekend getaway, or one final week of summer vacation, hitting the trails is a great way to enjoy the Northwoods.
The Bearskin State Trail is a family favorite, stretching south from downtown Minocqua through forests and past lakes, creeks, and plenty of Northwoods scenery. Walk a section of the trail or hop on your bikes and make an afternoon of it. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way, too.
Late summer is also a great time to scout out a favorite hiking or biking trail to return to when the fall colors arrive.
Spend a Day at the Beach
Literally, soak up the last rays of summer at one of our many beaches. Beaches like Torpy Park and Brandy Park offer amenities like tennis courts and playgrounds beyond just swimming. Other popular swimming spots include Clear Lake and Crystal Lake. The tan lines will fade but the memories won’t.

Get Out on the Water
With thousands of lakes in the Northwoods, no end-of-summer getaway is complete without spending some time on the water.
Rent a canoe or kayak and explore a quiet shoreline, take the family fishing, or head out for a relaxing boat ride. Paddling is an especially fun way to explore the area at a slower pace and gives kids a chance to watch for loons, eagles, turtles, and other wildlife along the way.
Whether you spend a couple of hours paddling or make a full day of it, getting on the water is one of the best ways to make the most of lake season.
Make It a Family Adventure
Looking for something beyond the beach or trails? The Minocqua area is full of family-friendly attractions that are still open and ready to enjoy during the final stretch of summer.
You can still visit Wildwood Wildlife Park Zoo & Safari to get up close with animals from around the world, or spend an afternoon at Rock Falls Riding Stable, where horseback riding, mini golf, and go-karts make for a full day of fun. The Northwoods Wildlife Center is also a great stop to learn about local wildlife and see the important work being done to rehabilitate injured and orphaned animals.
Even as summer starts to wind down, these attractions are still in full swing—making it easy to add a little extra adventure to your late-summer getaway.
