MINOCQUA, Wis. — A coalition of regional recreation and tourism organizations has officially launched the B.R. I.D.G.E. (Building Recreation Infrastructure for Diverse Groups & Experiences) capital campaign to support the development of a trail expansion project and proposed Tomahawk River dual-use bridge connecting ATV/UTV and snowmobile trail systems in the Minocqua area.
The campaign aims to raise $500,000 toward the long-term development of the project, which is targeted for completion by 2030. The project would expand trail connectivity between downtown Minocqua and existing regional trail systems while creating a safe, accessible crossing over the Tomahawk River for both ATV/UTV riders and snowmobilers.
Coalition partners include the Lakeland ATV/UTV Club, the Cross Country Cruisers Snowmobile Club, and the Minocqua Area Visitors Bureau.
As part of the campaign launch, the Minocqua Area Visitors Bureau has pledged $50,000 toward the trail expansion project, demonstrating its long-term commitment to strengthening recreation infrastructure and supporting the Northwoods tourism economy. Coalition leaders hope the pledge will inspire additional community investment, sponsorships, and regional partnerships as fundraising efforts move forward.
The project was developed through a shared vision among recreation groups, tourism leaders, the Minocqua Township, and community stakeholders who recognize the growing importance of outdoor recreation infrastructure to the Northwoods economy and quality of life.
“This project is about much more than building a bridge,” said Krystal Westfahl, President and CEO of the Minocqua Area Visitors Bureau. “It’s about investing in the future of the Northwoods, improving connectivity between communities, supporting local businesses, and creating year-round recreation opportunities that benefit residents and visitors alike.”
The proposed bridge and trail expansion would help connect riders safely into the Minocqua area while strengthening access to existing trail systems throughout North Central Wisconsin. Organizers say the project would also help support local restaurants, lodging properties, retail businesses, and other tourism-related industries that rely heavily on four-season visitation.
“For our club members and riders throughout the region, trail connectivity is incredibly important,” said Corky Sheppard of the Lakeland ATV/UTV Club. “This project creates safer access, improves the riding experience, and helps connect communities in a way that supports recreation and economic growth at the same time.”
The coalition says the project represents a unique collaboration between multiple recreation user groups working toward a shared regional goal.
“This bridge symbolizes cooperation and long-term vision,” said Jerry Wesner, Trail Boss, of the Cross Country Cruisers Snowmobile Club. “Snowmobilers and ATV/UTV riders both understand the importance of maintaining and improving trail infrastructure. By working together, we can create something that benefits the entire community for generations.”
In addition to recreation access, organizers emphasize the broader community impact of the project. Expanded trail connectivity is expected to increase visitation, encourage longer stays, and strengthen the Northwoods’ reputation as a premier outdoor recreation destination.
The first phase of the campaign will focus on community awareness, business engagement, sponsorship outreach, and regional fundraising efforts. Community members, businesses, and supporters can learn more about the project and contribute to the campaign by visiting: minocqua.org/bridge
