The Minocqua Area Visitors Bureau is proud to announce the launch of the Community Investment Fund, formerly known as the “room tax grant”, the grant program that reinvests local tourism dollars into projects that enhance life in the Northwoods for residents and visitors alike.
Funded by room tax revenue generated within the region’s tourism zone, this initiative aims to support projects that make a tangible difference in our communities, strengthening the connection between tourism and everyday life in northern Wisconsin.
“Tourism is more than a visitor economy—it’s a community economy,” said Krystal Westfahl, President & CEO of the Minocqua Area Visitors Bureau. “The Community Investment Fund helps ensure that the dollars our visitors bring in are returned to the people, places, and projects that keep our region vibrant.”
The grant program is administered by the Community Investment Fund Committee, comprised of board members from the Greater Minocqua Area Visitors Bureau, Inc. Projects must align with Wisconsin room tax statutes, meaning they should directly support tourism while also offering meaningful benefits to residents.
Eligible applicants include: 501(c)(3) public charities, 501(c)(6) organizations, Local businesses, & Municipal governments.
Grants range from a few thousand dollars to $50,000, with most awards expected around the $5,000 mark. No project is too big or too small—creative, collaborative, and community-focused ideas are encouraged.
Top proposals will improve the quality of life for residents, serve multiple communities or municipalities, encourage cross-sector collaboration, leverage additional funding sources, and help residents recognize the positive impact of tourism.
Projects may fall into the following categories:
Tangible Development: Capital improvements or facility upgrades with long-term value
Exceptional Events: Well-promoted events that attract a broad visitor base
Public Information: Wayfinding, signage, or educational tools that enhance the visitor experience
Got a Big Idea? Let’s Talk. Have a creative concept that doesn’t fit neatly into these categories? We want to hear from you. The Community Investment Fund welcomes innovative proposals that meet tourism goals while benefiting our Northwoods communities.
Due to the specific requirements of room tax funding, interested applicants are encouraged to connect with the Visitors Bureau before applying to ensure eligibility and alignment with program goals.
Together, let’s build a stronger, more connected Northwoods—where tourism and community thrive side by side.
