The Independent Film, SECRET LIFE, SECRET DEATH (1:30 pm)

The independent film, SECRET LIFE, SECRET DEATH
The Minocqua Library
Friday, October 3 , 2014  1:30 pm

The film details the true story of a young mother who fell into crime, in northern
Wisconsin and Gangland Chicago in the 20’s and 30’s.   The film was
produced entirely in Wisconsin, with Wisconsin actors, antique trains, vintage cars, and period costumes.  The screening is free and open to the public.

SECRET LIFE, SECRET DEATH is a critically acclaimed, award winning film, which has played from Chicago to LA, and London to Rome.  With its themes of Wisconsin History, trafficking, alcoholism, and the lethal burden of family secrets carried into the present, the film educates and provokes.  The movie shows the unglamorized underworld of gangsters in Wisconsin and Chicago.
A Question and Answer session with Director, Genevieve Davis, will follow the screening.  Davis spent 10 years researching the story behind the movie.  She wrote the book of the true story, also called  Secret Life, Secret Death.

"A haunting story" -- Rick Kogan, Chicago Tribune.

“Innovative and dazzling" --Marty Rubin, Gene Siskel Film Center

Moscow Nights (7:30 pm)

Moscow Nights
Nicolet College Theater,5364 College Drive
Rhinelander,
Friday, October 3, 2014 7:30 pm

Moscow Nights will bring the stage to life as they perform authentic Russian folk music ranging from ostentatiously quirky songs, to elaborate lyrical suites, to pulsating dance numbers. With an air of spontaneity, the versatile trio of world-recognized musicians perform dressed in traditional Russian attire, complete with Cossack hats, and armed with balalaikas. Don’t be fooled by the apparent ease, these musicians work hard to bring cultural traditions to life. Carefully crafting their music to include vocals, Russian percussion, bayan (accordion), zhaleika (wind instrument), and balalaika, Moscow Nights offers a dynamic and vivacious glimpse of Old Russia.

Admission: $12

Hobo Nephews Of Uncle Frank - Folk Rock (8:00 pm - 0:00 - midnight)

Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank - Folk Rock
Minocqua Brewing Company,238 Lakeshore,Dr,Minocqua
Friday, October 3, 2014 8:00 pm

The Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank's critically acclaimed 2007 album Sing! will be remembered as a landmark recording in the roots musicresurrection happening in Minnesota.  The recording is mostly live andraw, the playing sharp and dirty and the songs are as emotional and bold as they are vivid and well crafted.  The Hobo Nephews new album Traveling Show (release Sep 1, 2009) is a confident and exciting evolution of the same formula as the road hardened trio of drummer Paul Grill and the brother songwriting team of Ian and Teague Alexy eloquently trace the emotional ups and downs of life on the road over a roller coaster of dirtyroadhouse stomps, visceral ballads, rock n' roll burners, country-bluesshuffles and most things in between.   Most bands lack a strongsinger/songwriter with originality or true grit.  Hobo Nephews is therare group that can boast having two songwriters of style and substance.

The Alexy brothers grew up in the New Jersey shore town of SomersPoint - the town where Bob Dylan hired The Band before Ian and Teaguewere born.  A simple twist of fate brought them to Dylan's hometown ofDuluth, Minnesota where they started the band as a duo in 2005 with arevolving cast of musicians helping them celebrate their original songsalongside inspired renditions of Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt andmost importantly Woody Guthrie.   They did their first tour to the rocky mountains in a Honda Civic hatchback in which they survived the 10,000foot I-70 mountain pass in the middle of a blizzard.

The lion's share of Traveling Show was recorded in three marathon days at Rough Magic Studios in Brooklyn NY.  Marco Benevento – who the All Music Guide calls "an outrageously talented musician" -electrifies three tracks putting his organ, wurlitzer and circuit benttoys in an exciting new Americana context.  Pedal steel player Jon Graboff (Ryan Adams and The Cardinals) adds his signature sound to two songswhile members of fellow Minnesota roots music troubadours and frequentcollaborators Trampled By Turtles add impeccable violin, mandolin and banjo.

Traveling Show will come with a 60 minute film, Moments and Truths, that documents the making of the record in New York City as well as sights, sounds and encounters from all over the country.  Directed andedited by filmmaker/photographer Joshua Priestley, and partially shot by the band themselves, Moments And Truths is a uniquely stylized film that captures transient life in a way notpreviously seen in the banal climate of reality tv-esque banddocumentaries.   It also captures the band at an exciting period astheir musicianship, songwriting and musical vision rise to newheights.

Referred to as a "national treasure" by the Library of Congress and described by the State Department as a "musical ambassador", Bob Milne started as a saloon pianist in Detroit which embarked him on a musical career that has seen him play at the White House and around the globe.  Bob is truly one of the premier ragtime pianists around.  He intersperses history, stories and a description of composers' styles with his music. Truly an evening of entertainment for young and old alike.  Bob is coming back by popular demand --- mark your calendar and bring your friends and family.  A fantastic evening of live entertainment for any age.

'THE LADY WITH THE ANSWERS, ASK ANN LANDERS' (9:00 am)

'THE LADY WITH THE ANSWERS, ASK ANN LANDERS'
Campanile Center For The Arts,141 Milwaukee Street,Minocqua
Wednesday,October 15, 2014 7:00 pm

For decades, renowned advice columnist Ann Landers answered countless letters from love-lorn teens, confused couples and a multitude of others in need of advice. No topic was off-limits, including nude housekeeping, sex in a motorcycle helmet, the proper way to hang toilet paper, sibling rivalries, addiction, religion and wandering spouses. Landers regaled her readers with direct, insightful and often humourously honest responses.

Late on a 1975 night in Landers' Chicago apartment, an ironic twist of events confronts her with a looming deadline for a column dealing with a new kind of heartbreak: her own. As she shares her struggles to complete the column with us, we learn as much about ourselves as we do about the wise, funny, no-nonsense woman whose daily dialogue with America helped shape the social and sexual landscapes of the last half-century.

Join us for this one woman show and reminisce about how many of us started the day with her column.  Tickets are Adults $20, Students $10.

The May North - Americana/Folk/Bluegrass (8:00 pm - 0:00 - midnight)

The May North - Americana/Folk/Bluegrass
Minocqua Brewing Company,238 Lakeshore,Dr,Minocqua
Friday, October 17, 2014 8:00 pm

There’s a restless spirit flowing through the North Country that’s hard todefine, and sometimes a good song is the only way to put it into properperspective. The May North has a rare knack for doing just that—makingsense of love, loss, long winters, longer highways and the shiftinglines between urban and country living. With a sound that’s part classic Americana, part folk, part bluegrass and a bit of breakneck blues, TheMay North pays tribute to these forms while carving its own distinctlyoriginal path.

The members of The May North converged around St.Paul, MN in 2010 and quickly found a home in the blossoming Midwestacoustic music scene. Prior to that, these diverse musicians honed their skills jamming in bluegrass and blues circles and performing in various rock, funk and symphony ensembles.

The band is careful not todefine themselves as strictly “bluegrass” or “folk,” as the music findsits influences, lyrics, and keys deviate away from the norms of thesegenres. However, they do employ the time-honored instruments of acoustic guitar, upright bass, banjo, dobro and fiddle to create an earthy andintricately-woven soundscape. With evocative ballads and hard-drivingfoot-stompers, their engaging songs bring live audiences from quietreflection to howling jubilation within the course of an evening.

With the release of their second album, Interstate Lives, TheMay North showcases a wide range of original material rich in emotion, lyrical depth and musical ingenuity. This is bluegrass withoutboundaries, folk without pretense, honest storytelling without apology.

“ Armed with lightning fast, laser accuratebluegrass instruments, the EverGreen Grass Band takes stage loaded for bear anddelivers a show that takes no prisoners.  Their expert chops, homespun original tunes and sparkling vocal harmonies conquer the summits ofmusical elevations that many bands attempt, yet so few achieve.  Donot miss this show”   - Martha Galep, MinnesotaBluegrass and Old Time Music Association Harvest Jam Director

“An excellent choice for the first year of ourfestival.  They have a large, enthusiastic fan base that really drewa crowd.  Our best bet for success is to be sure we book them nextyear”  - Dan Callan, Organizer,  ‘Grass On The ChippewaBluegrass Festival (Durand, WI)

“The band’s style is as refreshing as theseyoung fellers’ attitudes: have a lot to say, play it fast (but not hard) anddump the weary arrangements for some jam busting, kick ass takes on thetraditional sound”   - Volume One Magazine(Eau Claire, WI)
